Blue Waters Travel delivers exceptional wild quail hunting throughout South America, offering guests a distinctive chance to merge fly fishing and wing shooting (cast and blast) within a single journey from March 15th through May 1st. Few global destinations provide quail hunting with such abundant wild bird numbers in such spectacular surroundings; and nowhere else can one experience fly fishing and quail hunting of this quality from a single lodge.
Six breeding pairs of California quail were introduced to Valle Traful just over fifty years ago. Mild climate and limited predators triggered a population explosion, and wild birds now inhabit Central Patagonia throughout. Though birds flourish abundantly, California quail favor particular habitat and tend to run, making expert guide knowledge and skilled dog work essential to locate them and hold them in optimal cover. Wild Patagonian quail prove tough, hardy, quick to flush and exceptionally challenging for typical hunters due to their speed and unpredictable flight patterns. For those appreciating demanding wild bird pursuits, our quail program presents a magnificent venue.
We approach quail hunting with the same dedication as our fly fishing and have cultivated an extensive kennel of well-trained pointers plus a professional guide staff who scout thoroughly, rotate hunting circuits and work relentlessly to guarantee quality hunting for every guest. During typical outings, guests encounter between four and ten coveys containing between twenty and one hundred quail each. Skilled shooters should anticipate between ten and fifteen quail daily and average fifty shells to achieve a complete limit of fifteen birds.
Guests should maintain physical fitness and enjoy easy to moderate walking for two to five miles daily. Direct correlation exists between those who walk comfortably and bird numbers encountered, as well as between shooting proficiency and birds harvested. Our hunting shouldn’t be compared to plantation, preserve or vehicle-based hunting—we’ve developed a style and program adapted specifically to maximize quail encounters for our guests.
Blue Waters Travel provides Beretta Silver Pigeon 20 & 28-gauge over-and-under shotguns plus Urika 391 Automatic 20-gauge shotguns available for rental, with ammunition available for purchase. Hunters may travel with personal firearms but should verify government regulations beforehand. The procedure remains straightforward yet requires additional airport processing time. Guests should pack field trousers or chaps and quality field boots with water-resistant properties. Optionally, guests may bring a game bag or vest, shooting eyewear, and gloves. Blue Waters supplies orange headwear and vests to each hunter along with a thorough safety briefing before shooting commences.
